<a href="#comment-497" rel="nofollow">@Ryan</a>

Landscape timbers are the core of a log after the plies have been peeled off for plywood. That's why Georgia-Pacific is the biggest supplier of these. This wood IS kiln-dried, but NOT pressure-treated, just surface-treated. Any wet wood will grow mold if not allowed to dry quickly enough.

Andy,

The new ones were not covered in mold because they hadn't been sitting outside in a pile all winter long. I found a pile elsewhere inside that looked decent and brought them home. Everything outside looks good now.

Landscape Timbers are by nature green, NOT KILN DRIED. They are going to have mold, no matter where you go...Home Depot, Lowes, your local lumberyard, etc.. I would suggest buying a kiln dried 4x4 if you are afraid of mold.
